Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a disorder in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions). In some cases, people only experience the unwanted and recurrent thoughts, without engaging in repetitive behaviours.

The repetitive behaviours, which can include various acts, generally regarding everyday life such as hand washing, checking on things or cleaning, can cause significant distress and can interfere with a person’s daily activities and social interactions.

Many people with OCD know or suspect their obsessions are not realistic; others may think they could be true (known as limited insight). Even if they understand their obsessions are not realistic, they find it difficult to disengage from the obsessive thoughts or stop the compulsive actions.
